Berlin, 23 September 2026. The Berlin vertical AI start-up mika raises €6 million. Instead of digitising the traditional tax firm, mika rebuilds bookkeeping, taxes and finance from the ground up as AI-native infrastructure for small and medium-sized businesses. For small limited companies, mika takes over ongoing bookkeeping, VAT pre-returns, the Jahresabschluss (the annual financial statements) and tax returns. The seed round is led by the European VC Smedvig Ventures. Also taking part are the Basel family office Wecken & Cie. (Care4 AG), the studiVZ co-founders Dennis Bemmann and Michael Brehm, limango founder Johannes Ditterich and Martina Pfeifer (encourageventures). Existing investors Keen Venture Partners and Dutch Founders Fund increase their stakes. The fresh capital goes into growth and the further development of the AI system.
Germany has almost one million small limited companies. For them, bookkeeping, VAT pre-returns and the Jahresabschluss are required by law. In theory, the managing directors may do all of it themselves. In practice, hardly anyone does: the risk is too high and the knowledge too scattered. So small businesses pay thousands of euros every year just to meet their basic obligations.
Agnieszka Walorska knows the problem. She grew up without entrepreneurial role models and could not count on financial help from family and friends when she founded her first company. That is exactly when German bureaucracy becomes a barrier to entry: several thousand euros a year for a tax advisor, just to meet legal obligations, keeps above all those people from founding who have no savings or experienced network to fall back on.
“As soon as you found a GmbH in Germany, you hear: you need a tax advisor. It goes so far that some founders believe it is a legal requirement. For me it is clear that this cannot and must not be the case,” says Agnieszka Walorska, founder and CEO of mika. “At mika we use AI to open up access, so that your wallet, your parents and your network no longer decide who gets to start a company.”
Agnieszka Walorska runs mika together with Luke Linnekuhle (CFO) and Henry Müssemann (CTO). Linnekuhle helped build the finance function of the activewear brand Oceansapart. Müssemann was previously Head of Engineering at Freezingdata, a digital forensics software company he led through to its exit.
“Nowhere else in Europe are bookkeeping and taxes for small businesses as complex and expensive as in Germany, where the two are so closely intertwined that a single mistake feeds straight into the tax bill. That is why even the big international players have never gained a foothold here,” says Freddie Kalfayan, Principal at Smedvig Ventures. “mika is the first to meet this complexity from the ground up, and its customers show an enthusiasm we have rarely seen in our portfolio.”
At the heart of mika is an AI-native general ledger: the AI understands every receipt and every payment. Depending on the task, different AI models do the work, embedded in expertise and rules that mika has developed itself.
mika’s AI bookkeeping matches, books and explains to users what it means, in most cases entirely without manual intervention. Trained in-house accountants review the results and step in wherever the complexity calls for human work. On top of that comes something a tax firm does not offer: you can talk to your own numbers, either directly in mika or through a standardised AI interface, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), in AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Claude.
mika also takes the friction out of everyday work: you upload a confusing letter from the Finanzamt (the German tax office) and get it explained right away, together with what to do next. The AI chat answers questions about your own bookkeeping and finances instantly, even on a Sunday evening. Individual tax advice is not part of the offering yet. For that, mika works with licensed tax advisors from its network.
At the start of the year, around 400 GmbHs and UGs (German limited companies) used mika. Today it is more than 750. mika started with digital service businesses such as agencies and consultancies. Customers now also come from SaaS, real estate and e-commerce, and most recently retail and skilled trades have joined. Revenue has been growing by more than 20 percent a month for months, and in July 2026 the company passed one million euros in annual revenue.
“With mika we did not just introduce new software, we added a digital team member to our bookkeeping. It is fascinating to see how AI gives us the room to focus on our strategy, creativity and customers. For us that is the proof that AI can take real weight off people instead of replacing them,” says Kolja Sagorski, founder of patchletter.
“When we invested in 2024, the ‘AI plus human’ model was seen as a niche. To many it was too much service and too little software,” says Djoni de Vos, Principal at Keen Venture Partners. “Today many investors describe exactly this model as the next big category: service as software. mika proved it works before there was a name for it.”
